Education

The Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne continues to take enrolments for the Diploma of Manufacturing Technology (Structural Steel Detailing stream) which commenced on the 12th July, 2010. Classes  at Swinburne next year will include evening classes and some online learning  material to suit the needs of those people working in industry.

The Central Institute of Technology in Perth has also stepped up to meet the challenge of supplying Diploma trained students in this area of Structural Design Drafting and Structural Steel Detailing.  Their diploma is delivered over a 15 week period in a full time engineering/drafting simulated office environment. They are also considering running the course part time over 2 semesters or 30 weeks.

After discussions with Ian Black of Swinburne University and Sam Prescott of The Central Institute, we can advise that these courses are currently only available to students attending the respective Colleges. There are hopes that Swinburne University will collaborate with the Central Institute of Technology in Perth to prepare and offer this course nationally with an on-line delivery option to trainees living outside of Perth & Melbourne.

Those with industry experience will be keen to learn of the opportunities that exist for recognition of their skills and may find that they would not be required to attend classes for the first semester of basic and generic skills, but could work on submitting a portfolio of evidence for recognition of prior learning  (RPL) assessment this year and join the classes for the specific skills and knowledge  around structural steel detailing which commence in February 2011.

Interest in this course has been generated through the AISD and we have received calls from all around the country and even from overseas as there are very few courses available in this field around the world.

19th March 2010 EDUCATION UPDATE
Great News!

Swinburne University of Technology is now offering  the Diploma of Manufacturing Technology (Structural Steel Detailing  stream).

Due to a high degree of interest in formalised recognition  and training in structural steel detailing, Swinburne has worked with the Australian  Institute of Steel Detailers to provide training opportunities to build  capabilities and specialisation in the industry.

In order to have the broadest appeal, the course will provide both generalist and specialist skills in drafting, interpreting  technical drawings, CAD skills and supporting mathematics and engineering  principles, coupled with topics including;

  • advanced detail drafting
  • interpret architectural and engineering design specifications for structural steel detailing
  • detailing  steel members
  • bolts and welds for structural steelwork connections
  • detail standardised structural connections
  • select welding processes
  • incorporate structural steel detailing into fabrication and construction project management.

Information about this course will be available at www.swin.edu.au/courses shortly, but here is a sneak peak at the  subjects that will be available for mid year intake:
MEM09002B:                  Interpret Technical drawing
MEM13014A:                  Apply principles of occupational health and safety in work environment
MEM05051A:                  Select welding processes
MEM30012a:                  Apply mathematical techniques in a manufacturing engineering or related environment
MEM16006A :                 Organise and communicate information
& Mem16008a:               Interact with computing technology
MEM09009C:                  Create 2D drawings using computer aided design system

These units can also lead to other qualifications, such as the Diploma of Engineering - Technical, and form a strong foundation for the specialist skills delivered later in the program.

Enrolment sessions will be held at Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn campus, John Street Hawthorn on Wednesday 16th June 2010 between 3pm and 6pm.
