It's long been the aim of the AISD to do what we can to address the issue of design documentation quality. After much discussion & debate among steel detailers it was decided that in order to get the ear of design consultants, our approach should be inclusive and pro-active, in other words, it should be more carrot & less stick.
Three targets were identified as being critical for this approach to work.
-
Instead of admonishing consultants for poor documentation, (a tack which, in the past has been largely ignored), we should recognise those consultants who make the effort to provide an ethical & professional service to the industry.
-
If our praise is to mean anything, the AISD must first be recognised as a bona-fide representative body. This means raising the profile not only of the AISD as an organisation but also the crucial role steel detailers play in the steel construction industry.
-
Lastly, if our commendations are to be heard, they need to be delivered in a forum where those we are trying to influence are present and prepared to listen.
What better time & place to achieve these goals than the annual ASI Steel Awards.
The judging criteria for the awards are the AISD Design Documentation Check Lists which provides us with the opportunity to publicise the particular aspects of design documentation that have long been adversely affecting steel detailers.
Two awards are presented for Excellence in Design Documentation Quality. One for a structural design engineer, and one for an architect or building designer. To make all this happen we need the input of our sole trader & company members to firstly nominate a project that has proven to exhibit good quality design drawings, either structural or architectural, and then to assess that project against the appropriate AISD checklist.
Each sole trader & company member can nominate one project in each category. The nominee of the winning entry receives two free tickets to the ASI Steel Awards night valued at $125 each. The winning consultancy also receives two free tickets for a representative and partner to collect their prize on the night.
The steel construction industry "night of nights" is the occasion to recognize the high achievers who over the past year, through their innovation, dedication or skill have made a significant contribution to the benefit of the steel construction industry.
As ever, the awards remain the centre-piece of the evening, but the event now also enjoys an excellent reputation as a great night out, with an exciting mix of networking opportunities, quality entertainment, great food, fine wine, live music and dancing.
Here's your chance to help your industry. Your nomination forms can be found on this website so please take the time to fill one out and return it with the details and assessment of your favorite job for the year.
Yours faithfully,
Clayton Roxborough
